Pocket Rocket - 15 minute burn

My first review from the Chilli Pepper Company is their intense Pocket Rocket (a.k.a. 15 minute burn). Am I crazy for starting out near the high end of the scale? Quite possibly.

At the outset, I think it's worth mentioning that this is possibly the hottest extract sauce that I've ever had, which can still (legitimately) call itself a sauce! Whereas most sauces that make use of extract tend to find themselves overpowered by the harsh chemical overtones, the Pocket Rocket somehow manages to stay surprisingly complex. From just a drop, immediately there is a massive hit of Naga Jolokia, followed by a quick wash of herbs, and finally a sharp punch of spicy tomato. The bottle lists 7.3 million SHU extract as being key to its intensity, and I would estimate its final heat to be somewhere between 2 million and 2.5 million SHU.

Along with plenty of fresh Naga, these little vials of pain include varying amounts of pineapple juice, lemon juice, vinegar, tomato, mango, molasses, celery, herbs and spices. Whilst the presence of extract is still noticeable, the fact that this sauce still manages to flag its flavour up to the taste buds is a testament to the culinary skills of the good folks at the Chilli Pepper Company. This is clearly a brew made with care and craft. Plus, at £4.50 for a seemingly meagre 30ml, trust me when I say that it's rather good value for what you get in the bottle.

For my money, this would be perfect for giving an extra kick to a Red or Jungle Thai curry, if that kick were to come from a startled mule.

  • Surprisingly good level of flavour
  • Astounding heat with just the right amount of pain

  • Still evidently an extract sauce
  • Rather boring bottle

I found your site poking around looking for reviews. I have been reviewing hot sauce for not that long. Recently involved my daughter (10) who rates sauces as either "milk worthy" or not. If not, then she goes on. If milk worthy, she is done sampling or even talking bout it because she is chugging milk.

Our reviews are here. Would love to see you comment on one or two. Trying to encourage her more.
